About the text

The core text

Each of the sixty-four hexagrams has a name, a judgment, an image and six lines, and the first two have one more passage, for when all six lines move. This is the oldest layer of the Book of Changes, and Moving Lines gives it in full. Wilhelm's commentary on it is here too, in German and in English, for all sixty-four hexagrams.

How the English was made

The English follows Wilhelm's German line by line, in plain modern English, and keeps every image, event and verdict of his. Where the German can be read two ways, the Chinese decides. Anyone the text does not mark as a man or a woman is "they".

Names

Each hexagram's name is given in pinyin with its tone marks, beside the Chinese characters. The English titles are Wilhelm's, with his alternatives in parentheses.
